Healthy Snacks for Teeth

Most people assume that if it’s good for your body, it’s good for your teeth. This is true in many cases, but it may surprise you to know that some (depending on your oral health) are only best in moderation. For example, if your body naturally has a higher pH level, staying away from acidic foods such as oranges might be something to consider. Acid can erode the enamel of your teeth, leaving them more susceptible to decay.

Here are our tips on what to eat for maintaining balanced oral hygiene.

Instead of Chips – Eat an Apple

You’ve probably heard this before, but it’s so true! Many people eat a small bag of chips every day as it’s such a common lunch food item. Starchy foods get caught in teeth and turn into sugar, causing decay. Not to mention, most people don’t brush their teeth after lunch, so the food has many hours to settle in. Cut up apples into crisp slices for a fun snack with a similar, crunchy texture.

Bonus: Apples have a lot of energy and clean teeth while you munch on them!

Instead of Chocolate Candy Bar – Eat Cocoa Covered Almonds

Sometimes, there’s nothing better than a quick stop for a candy bar. Except, there are actually a lot of things that are exponentially better. Candy bars contain massive amounts of tooth rotting sugar. Instead, try to find some almonds with a light dusting of cocoa powder. This high protein snack won’t just fill you up, but doesn’t contain much sugar! You can even make your own.

Bonus: The protein packs a punch around that 3 PM sluggish time.

Instead of “Your Favorite Unhealthy Snack” – Eat Granola

I know. It’s like we cheated… But really, granola is a great thing to keep on hand. While some store bought mixes do contain sugar (be sure to check the nutritional facts before you buy!), making your own at home or finding a healthier one is a great way to replace any unhealthy snacking with a nutritious alternative. Nuts are great for teeth, and can even help clean them! Plus, if you make your own, you can change it each time you make a new batch, so you won’t get tired of it. Make separate baggies for each day of the week and you don’t even have any prep time before work!

Bonus: They’re great for the kiddos, too.
